An Ode to Poe - Halloween Idea-ology

The 2022 Halloween Idea-ology release from Tim Holtz is fabulous! So many great products that can be used year round so be sure to stock up!

 

As I was going through the products when I got them, there were a few pieces that inspired this make: the ravens, the baseboard chamber door and the piece of Poe ephemera.

 

I started trying to think of what things I could use to make a project that could showcase some of Edgar Allan Poe's stories and poems.

This was the outcome. I hope you enjoy it!

Annabel Lee  - a poem by Edgar Allan Poe

The Raven - A poem by Edgar Allan Poe

I decided to leave the metal on the card file since I was doing books. It seemed appropriate.  

This book vignette represents the short story The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe.

 

I used a bunch of Distress Crypt Grit Paste on this vignettte!

The fork sconce made from Adornments Silverware.

The Cask of Amontillado made from an Idea-ology Barrel and Halloween Remnant Rubs.

 

This story of revenge takes place in the Montressor family catacombs and there are bones everywhere.

The short story The Gold Bug is about looking for pirate treasure.

 

 It begins when a man finds a gold bug with a skull on its shell.

 

 Then he and some friends use a skull and the bug to find the pirate treasure.

 

This is the view from the other end of the piece.

 

The Oval Portrait is an very, very short story by Edgar Allan Poe.

 

It is about a traveler who takes refuge in an abandoned house and discovers a very lifelike oval portrait and a diary that tells its story.

 

Poe's chamber or studio is represented in this area. You see candles and books and things I imagined he used as inspiration for his stories.

 

On the top shelf are a bunch of books I thought Poe might use for reference, but tucked between them is a letter. It represents one of the first detective mystery stories called The Purloined Letter.

 

I had been wanting to use this man with his cat paperdoll, and figured this was as good a time as any. I framed him holding his cat, because Poe has a short story called The Black Cat. I know this cat isn't black but again, I am using a man who loves his cat as inspiration for Poe's story.

The eye on this shelf really stands out.

Both the eye and the heart under the floor boards are from the short story The Tell Tale Heart.

I just added a raven and skull on the bottom level thinking they might be inspiration for his poem The Raven and for the Gold Bug Pirate story. The papers and pen nib are representative of him writing a story.

You did it! You made it all the way to the end! I truly hope you like this project as much as I do. I really had such a fun time working on it and trying to find things to include that could represent different poems and short stories. Thanks also for bearing with my literary geekiness as well. LOL! I tried to control myself and to be honest, I could have been a lot worse. :-D Regardless, I appreciate you sticking with me to the end.

Haulin' Pumpkins - Whimsy Stamps

I was intrigued by the Whimsy Stamps Fill a Truck Stamp set and came up with several Halloween ideas for using this stamps, so be prepared to see it again. Since it is still early in the Halloween season, I thought I'd start with a pumpkin patch card. This is my first easel card and I thought it was pretty fun to try. Remember,  I still consider myself a newbie card maker so I don't know all the cool card techniques and styles. This was easier than I thought so I might be doing more easel cards now that I have one under my belt.

As usual, I made a video tutorial as I was making this card. I hope it covers all the details and then some.

There you have the first of my Fill a Truck cards. I think it turned out to be a pretty cute card but I think it was a bit labor intensive, so if you are looking for a quick card, this isn't it. But if you enjoy the making process and just want a cute card then I say go for it!

Hello Mortals - Whimsy Stamps

 

For my next card as part  of the Whimsy Stamps Halloweener Design Team, I wanted to use this cute gargoyle. He made me think of the gargoyles in Disney’s Hunchback of Norte Dame so I wanted to make a Paris catacomb feeling card. I went with neutrals, and I love how it turned out. 

I made a short video tutorial as I made this card and included an idea that didn't work and how I fixed it.

Halloween Crackers and Noisemakers - Sizzix

 

I wanted to make something really fun out of the Retro Halloween dies from Tim Holtz and Sizzix, so I made Crackers and Noisemakers. These were simple makes and I really enjoyed the process.

Headless Horseman Light-up Card for Whimsy Stamps

I have another card for you today for the Whimsy Stamps Halloweener Design Team, and this one LIGHTS UP! This card features the Headless Horseman Clear Stamp Set, The Shaker Maker Glitter Globe Die Set, Nevermore Paper Pack, Tree Silhouette Rubber Stamp, and the bats are from the Build a Graveyard Die Set. Links to these are at the bottom of this post as well as links to the EZ Lights from Pear Blossom Press.

I filmed a tutorial as I was making this and threw in a mini ink blending tutorial as well as a mini machine stitching on paper tutorial, so it ended up being kind of long. Regardless, I hope you find it informative and helpful.

I used the EZ Lights with the set of three lights on wires for this card. The push button for them is the lowest bat on the card. It lights up just the Headless Horseman's Head. You do have to fussy cut the teeny, tiny eyes, nose and mouth with a Craft Knife, but it is worth the time and patience in my opinion!

I just love the look of this stamp with his face lit up!

That being said, the card and stamps are still just as great when his face doesn't light up, so if you aren't in to the trouble of the fussy cutting and fooling around with the lights, not a problem. Just stamp it all and you still have a great card!

I truly hope you enjoyed the video tutorial on this card and like Jennifer McGuire did for me, that it sparks an idea or inspiration for your own make.

Tim Holtz Sizzix Halloween Release

Such a FUN Halloween release from Tim Holtz and Sizzix right? Here are photos of both of the makes for the live, I have several you haven't seen that I will be posting this week. I'm keeping those under wraps until I post.  I have a tutorial for this Otis Mischievious make that will be coming soon.

This fun card using Mischievous, Bold Text and Pumpkin Duo is very straightforward. I just thought I would make a card with cats being cats. Laying on stuff, sitting by stuff, and walking on stuff you are trying to read. LOL! Fellow cat servants can relate.

Halloweeds Magic Slider Card for Whimsy Stamps

 

I am so happy to finally get to announce that I am part of the first ever, inaugural Whimsy Stamps Halloweener Design Team. For the next three months you will see some fun Halloween inspiration using Whimsy Stamps' dies, paper and stamps. Let's get started with the first one, a Magic Slider Card featuring the Halloweeds Clear Stamp Set.

As I was making this card, I recorded myself, so here is a Youtube video tutorial showing how I made this card.

I do not own a single alcohol ink pen, such as Copic or any other brand, so I water color my images with Distress Inks. It's just what I do.

Along with the Halloweeds stamp set, I used the Shaker Maker Rectangle dies, and the Autumn Hues paper pack, all from Whimsy Stamps. Links to the products are at the end of this post.
