When two Holidays Collide.....

What's This? What's This? There's color everywhere!  If it wasn't obvious, I was inspired by the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay at Disneyland that is based around the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. The Toyland bag and Gift Wrap dies were the kickoff point for this piece and then it just expanded from there.
Begin by painting the Ideaology Coffin Vignette and the 2nd largest Vignette Box with Black Soot Distress Paint.
Then emboss some Heavystock using the 3D Engraved Texture Fade and the Cracked 3D texture fade.
Cut the 3D Engraved piece into strips to fit around the outside of the box. Adhere them with Distress Collage Medium. On this make I used the backside of the engraved pieces, not the puffy side.
Then I attached the cracked piece to the top of the Vignette Box. Use a bone folder or some of other similar item to press the edges down all the way around to make it not as obvious that there is an edge there.

It should look like this when you are finished and then I painted it black again.
Once it is dry, put a little bit of Hickory Smoke Distress Paint on the nonstick mat, and get a little on your finger.
Then lightly rub some Hickory Smoke paint onto just the raised areas to highlight the carved features. The color scheme is also very cartoony and goes well with the Nightmare theme.
Next, I added the same engraved strips all along the outside of the coffin, and I drybrushed some Hickory Smoke inside the coffin to lighten the Black Soot and so it blended a little better with the outside.
In the back I put some of the Snowscape background but cut in grey and black  and layered. Lastly I added the moon, bats and gates from Gatekeeper.

I grabbed two pieces of Idea-ology Worn Wallpaper, and altered them a little. I painted the centers of these poinsettias with Wild Honey Distress Ink. Then I sprayed the entire piece with Pumice Stone to try and make the diamond pattern a little less apparent.
I also sprayed this candle Worn Wallpaper with Pumice Stone Distress Stain. I wanted the darker color on both wall papers for making a quilt.

I cut both pieces into different sizes and then pieced them together on the back of the coffin with Distress Collage Medium. Once it was all covered, I cut a bunch of the little X stitches from Toyland and put them all over the seams

For the packages on the back, I had some papers that I had colored in a practice session with inks, stamps, stencils, etc. I used several to cut the packages and the ribbons. I cut all of the greenery from the Winter Wardrobe set, but out of black cardstock instead of green , and I cut the berries from some Heavystock colored with Distress Crackling Campfire.

Here you can see how the back of the coffin looks when it is finished. This was made as a nod to Sally and her patchwork dress.

I put all of the die pieces together before I started adding them to the coffin. Once I got the basics finished I was able to see what bits I wanted to change or add in the final,
Here you can see some greenery cut from black with Crackling Campfire berries.  I tucked the presents from Gift Wrap behind the Toyland Bag.
This back was cut from Heavystock that I had stamped and colored with Distress Peeled Paint colors and stamped with the Linen stamp to give it a little Ooogie Boogie vibe. To make the gifts a little scary since Jack's presents were scary too. The FANGS for the bear and the snake are just the last stripe on the candy cane. You only need the very tip. The eyes are the stitches instead of the ones that come with the die. I used the eyes from the bear to make the eyes on the snake, which is made from two candy canes in black and orange (like the snake in the attic in Haunted Mansion Holiday) The second candy cane I cut in half and suck part on one side of the bear and then I hand cut the rest of the cane into a tail shape and put it to the right of the bear so it looks like the snake is throughout the bag and not just poking out one side.
To make Jack, I cut out the male Day of the Dead skeleton and just colored his outfit like a Santa Suit. I also trimmed off the sombrero and attached a santa hat from Winter Wardrobe. Then I popped some greenery in his hand where the neck of the guitar would go.
In the top of the coffin I just arranged the rest of the packages and tucked greenry here and there to add interest.

Here you can see the other side of in the right. Again these were all practice backgrounds that I had made after some of Tim's Saturday demos. At this point I was finished with this pieces and sent it to Tim. He got it and asked if he could make one little change that kicked it up a notch to awesome!

He added the purple Idea-ology Halloween Tiny Lights. Genius! It was the perfect final touch that just made it perfectly fit the Haunted Mansion Holiday inspiration. Thanks Tim!

That's it. There really isn't a technique here, just have fun altering some dies and adding fun little touches to make a scene.

Savvy?

Ahoy mateys!  Thar be squalls ahead, savvy? I decided to have a little fun with the Tapestry and Anatomy Chart stamps from the Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous Halloween release.

The background here was made using that Iron-off Resist Technique that has been my go-to for months. I'm kind of obessessed with it and for this card I used Distress Embossing Glaze instead of clear embossing powder. I explained the technique (which I learned from Jennifer McGuire) in this post.

To make the pirate, I stamped the half skull and the femur and then fussy cut them out. I cut the femur in half and popped the skull out from the background for dimension. They are both on just a piece of Heavystock that I inked, tore, and curled to make it look like an old scroll. I put some grit paste and Distress Crayons onto two Long Fasteners, and put them in the two corners on the right to mimic old nails.
I dyed some Mummy Cloth with Aged Mahogany Distress Spray Stain (the same as the background) and then tied it around the top of the skull.
I also colored a few pearl beads with some alcohol ink and put them on a piece of the Ideaology Twine Trimming in a nod to one of the worst pirates I've ever heard of....but I have heard of him!
Here is a closer look at how the Fossilized Amber Distress Embossing Glaze resisted the Aged Mahogany Distress Spray Stain. Then when I ironed off the Distress Glaze, it left these cool splotchy gold remants. Fantastic!

To finish off this card I stamped a woodgrain onto a piece of Heavystock, hand cut a plank wide enough to fit the Worn Text letters. Then I stamped the word savvy? and embossed it with Ranger Antique White Embossing Powder.

That's it for today. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Season's Greetings Tri-Fold Mini Slimline

I had an absolute ball making this card that is completely inspired by Taylor from Taylored Expressions. I watched this video by her, while learning about the mini slimline size and loved her tri-fold version with the little square peek through. So shout out to Taylored Expressions for this great card idea. Please watch her video and leave her a comment.

Here is a picture of my pattern page. To make the card base you need a piece of cardstock 6 x 10.5 inches. Then score it on the 10.5 inch side at 3.5 and 7. When folded it will give you three 3.5 x 6 inch sections.

I thought this card style would be perfect for using the new layering stencils from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous for the 2020 Christmas Release. I wanted to color the Gatherings Layering Stencil with different colors of Distress Ink only on the front, so I masked off the back side of the card with Judikins Masking Roll 6". I cut it in half and used enough to cover the entire back.
For the front of the card I used Festive Berries, Peeled Paint/Pine Needles, and Gathered Twigs to color this stencil with a multi color finish. To get into all the detailed areas, I opted for the Distress Blending Brushes.
As you peel the Masking Roll off, you can see that it makes such a nice border and it kept all the color on the front.
For the second page, I again masked it off and then stenciled the Tree Lot layering stencil in Peeled Paint and Pine Needles with a touch of Gathered Twigs at the bottom.
To make the windows on the card, I used Tim Holtz Stacked Squares from Sizzix. I used the two largest squares and cut the largest in the front page, and then next smallest square in the middle. Cut them together to make the little frame, which is just the cardstock colored with Festive Berries to match everything else.
In the very center, I stamped the holly from Sketch Greenery, using the windows to help me line it up properly. I watercolored the image and then stamped a sentiment under it.
Here you can see a little closer, and I have to say I love this tiny holly image and the bold font underneath it.

Please be sure to check out the Taylored Expressions link above and like and comment. This is such a fun card style and size that I really want to make more!

Thank you for stopping by today. Now be prepared for more Halloween mixed with Christmas for just a little while longer.

See you later,

Tami

Aura of Foreboding - Dearly Departed

Oh my, this flower from the Dearly Departed stamp set by Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous is so beautiful! Although it is part of a Halloween stamp set, it really isn't holiday specific and can be used year round.
This Funeral Home advert is also part of the set.
I stamped the sign on the card background and then also on a piece of Heavystock and cut it out for dimension. I also stamped the flower on a piece of Heavystock, colored it with Distress Inks and then fussy cut it out and adhered it to the background.
I love the definition cutting it out really gave to the piece. The background is the Renaissance background stamp and the technique showing how I made it is in this post using Distress Embossing Glazes and an embossing resist technique I learned from Jennifer McGuire.

I finished this card with a Tiny Text Halloween phrase.

This was not a difficult card to make technique-wise, but the fussy cutting did take some time. Also, if you make a bunch of backgrounds ahead of time, then making the cards goes together much faster.

Apothecary Card - Examination CMS412

The Examination stamp set from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous has some fantastic graphics that can be used for cards, mixed media, journaling and scrapbooking.
Alright, let's talk about this background. The pharmacy labels are part of the stamp set, but they are all individual stamps. Now, you could use them on the index plastic and just stamp them as they are to make a background, but they have a bunch of space around them if you do that, which is fine if you want that look. I didn't want that look for this card. So I removed them one at a time and stamped them all right next to each other one at a time. It's the only way you can get them this close together. It did take a long time, but it was worth it for the look I achieved. Then I watercolored them all with Distress Inks one label at a time.

For a little interest on this card, I cut the background paper into two pieces by trimming 1" off along the right side. I also trimmed 1" off the front of the card. Then attached the big background piece on the smaller card front. The remaining 1" of background was adhered along the right side of the back/inside of the card.
I did a basic straight machine stitch around the front of the card, and a zigzag machine stitch down the strip.
You can see from this angle how when closed it looks like one piece, but when you open the card you can see the front is shorter than the back/inside of the card.

The focal point is a small Heavystock tag. I stamped the skeleton from the set in clear Embossing Ink, then embossed it with clear embossing fine detail powder. I colored the tag with Black Soot Distress Ink and then Ironed off the embossing powder to leave the matte skeleton image. It kind of looks like a blackboard image.
I added the word Apothecary from the Halloween Tiny Text stamps.
Also this little index stamp is part of the Examination set, so I stamped it, cut it out and attached it to the tag with a Tiny Clip.
I love the matte finish the iron-off technique leaves!

This card is a time sucker, so if you are looking for a quick card for someone, this isn't it. If you want to spend some time relaxing and stamping, stamping, stamping, coloring, coloring, coloring, then this card is for you!
