Wonderland Vignette - Sizzix Ch 2

Whoooooooooooooo are yooooooooooooou? I made this Alice in Wonderland inspired vignette with two of the newest Tim Holtz Sizzix chapter 2 releases - Artsy Stems and Abstract Faces.

 I recorded myself as I planned and made this project, so I compiled it all into this walk-through tutorial.

 To begin with I covered the sides of a large Idea-ology Square Vignette Box with the Abstract Faces scribbles cut from Distress Kraft Heavystock. Put a thin layer of Collage Medium Matte on the box, then press the die cut into it and make sure it is securely fastened onto the box. Next cover with Collage Medium and smooth it out with your fingers. Repeat with another die cut until the outside of the box is completely covered.

Then paint the outside of the box with Villainous Potion Distress Paint. Once it is completely dry, rub Shaded Lilac Distress Cranyon over the paint and rub it into the crevices with a slightly damp finger.

 Paint the inside with a mixture of blues, keeping the darker on the outside edges and the lighter toward the center.

 To make the toadstool, cut two of the rounded triangle shape from Watercolor cardstock. Then cut the bottom off one of them using the bottom of the die as you see in the photo above.

 

 Here are the various bits I used to make the main toadstool and caterpillar parts. I hand trimmed around the circle (head) and segmented piece I used for its body.

 

 I colored the pieces for the toadstool this way. The two scalloped segments will be layered to make the stem.

All of the pieces like this were mostly cut from left over pieces of green heavystock and cut apart in various ways to make blades of grass.

 

Another die cut that was trimmed to make various blades of grass. I got three blade shapes out of this piece if you count the piece that falls out in the middle of the blade.

 Here is the toadstool ready to be put into action in the vignette.

 For the toadstool I cut one of the half-circle rocks in half so it would poke out on both sides and then I added some of the grass strands I made. I use a variety of things to make pieces have dimension and for this one I cut a piece of thick foam. Another thing you can use is old bingo or scrabble chips, or layers of chipboard scraps,

 

Here is the piece put together as we have it so far. Now we need the flowers out front.

 

I cut a few extra Artsy Stems from the green heavystock and then cut them each along the top to cut off the flowers and make it seem like a vine.

 

I attached the vines, stems, and grass to the front and back of the rock and then made a little easel to hold it up at the front of the vignette box.

To get them to stand up I used the easel and the edge of the vignette box as you can see here,

I added a Word Plaque from the recent Tim Holtz Idea-ology release, colored it with Mustard Seed Distress Paint, and then attached it with Idea-ology Tack Nails.

 

I discussed in detail in the video how I made the caterpillar. As I said earlier I used the segmented shape and circle from Abstract Faces to make the shape of the caterpillar, then cut around them with scissors. The horns are the knockouts from the lips, the arms and feet are the ends of one of the eye lashes, and the face is just jumbled together from the knockouts.

 

One more detail I added was the Idea-ology Word Key that says Curious because Alice keeps claiming things are curiouser and curiouser.

 

I used the same Mustard See Distress Paint to make sure the details stand out.

Tim Holtz Sizzix Chapter 2 Release

  

Hooray for the new Sizzix Chapter 2 Release! I was honored to get to make with this fun, artsy release and I used the dies to make three projects. I recorded tutorials already so they will be coming this week.

For this card I used Abstract Faces, Cracked Leather 3D, Artsy Stems, and Bold Text 2.

I had so much fun coming up with this card style and my tutorial will show you how to make it. I used Bold Text 2, Cracked Leather 3D Folder, Artsy Stems and Bird Silhouettes.

For this Alice in Wonderland inspired make I used Abstract Faces and Artsy Stems to make alll of the parts of this wacky make! I will show you how I made all the parts in my tutorial later this week.

Idea-ology Birdhouse Decor

  

This is a sample project I made with the new Tim Holtz Idea-ology 2022 release. I thought the new Vignette Boxes Squares would make a great base for a birdcage and the Backdrops Volume 3, Memoir Ephemera, and Collage Tiles have some lovely spring colors that inspired this piece. It could make a lovely spring or Easter gift basket or favor for an adult or teenager. 

Here is a walk through video tutorial on the birdcage.

I used the Cathedral Bigz die from Tim and Sizzix, as well as the Decorative Trims dies.

Cut the following: 

    - 4 cathedrals from thin chipboard or Sizzix Mat Board, 4 from Black Kraft stock, 2 from one back drop and 2 from another. Cut the center section from chipboard and Backdrop paper for a faux door

    - 4 thin Decorative Trims scallops from backdrop paper, 2 large scallops from the same Back drop as  the sides and 2 large from the other Backdrop for the sides, and 4 large scallops from Black Kraftstock.

Adhere the small scallop Etcetera trips to the top edge of the smallest Vignette Box.

Trim as needed to get them to fit on the box.

Attach some Collage Tiles to the maoin box. I allowed then to go up over the area where the trim and box meet to add a little stability. Just be sure it doesn't go over the scallop area. Then attach the scallop paper over the trims.

 

I attached the Collage Tiles and the trims with Distress Collage Medium and as hyou an see I folded some around the corners of the Vignette Squares.

Once the box and cathedral pieces are covered, adhere the cathedral pieces to the inside of the scallop trims as shown above.

 

Then attach the large scalloped trim that is the same Backdrop as the Cathedral piece.

It should look like this. You will have to trim the inside scallop pieces so they fit.

The cathedral pieces are shorter than the sides and but they won't seem like it when it is finally all together,

This is what it will look like when all the sides are dry and secured in place.

 

You can see that the larger scallop matches the backdrops on the front of the cathedral.

 

It looks like this on the inside. Now you need to use a bone folder or something round, to cure the tops of the cathedrals inward so that they meet at the top to for a bird cage.

I tied the tops together with some rayon seam binding that I colored with Kitsch Flamingo and a touch of Walnut Stain Distress Spray Stain,

I did add some Mini Foundations to the bottom of the Vignette Square to raise it up just a little and added a bit of Speckled Egg or Broken China or ? bluish Distress Paint on the raised areas.

This tag came together very quickly using pieces from the Memoir Ephemera Pack.

On the front of the box I added a quill from the new Quill and Arrows Adornments. It is colored with the same Distress Paint as the Mini Foundations.

Lastly, if you watched the video, you saw that I had a bag of Hersey's Chocolate Mini Eggs in the cage for a gift or favor. but they were on top of some collaged eggs so that when the candy was consumed they recipient still has a lovely decor piece to enjoy.

You can see the collaged eggs from this angle a little better.

 These were simple to make. I purchased 2" styrofoam eggs, covered then with Entomology Collage Paper and Distress Collage Medium. Then dry naturally. When they are completely dry I colored them with some Distress Mica Crayons in Winterberry and Snow Flurries. Then I added a piece of Velvet Trim and a Heart Adornment. These should be glued together with Hot Glue and then adhered into the birdcage on some Spanish Moss with Hot Glue as well or they will migrate and flip over due to the heaviness of the adornment.

Tim Holtz Distress Foundry Wax

I just can't get over how innovative and amazing the new Distress Foundry Waxes are from Tim Holtz and Ranger Ink. I love that I can add just a little bit or a lot of metallic guilding to so many different surfaces. If you missed the live Youtube reveal and demo from Tim, I urge you to stop reading right now and go over an watch it on his Youtube channel. This wax is not like any other on the market and when you heat it, the magic happens!

I made my own short video tutorial on this project, but mainly focused on how I made (or more accurately attempted to make) the faux mercury glass vase.

For this project I worked with the Sterling and Statue Foundry Waxes. I pounced them onto the Etcetera Tag washer for a little sparkle at the top.

Then pounced them with my finger onto the Adornments Stars.

I thought the Statue wax would make great metallic centers for the Bouqet flowers and I love how they turned out.

Then of course the Faux Mercury Glass technique that I show in my video tutorial. I am still perfecting this but it has been really fun to experiment with this technique.

To make the Vignette Frame look like an old wooden guilded frame, I first stained it with Pumice Stone and Weathered Wood Distress Spray stains. Once it was completely dry, I put some Foundry Wax in Sterline and Statue on the raised areas of the frame, and then heated it. I love how it looks so weathered.

I only used a tiny bit of the Statue but that is all I really needed. I colored the Snapshots photo with Distress Crayons before framing it.

Another set of Star Adornments in the bottom corner.

Lastly I added a little guilding to the Numeric date at the bottom.

Tim Holtz Idea-ology 2022

 

Wow, wow, wow! Tim Holtz did it again! Do you have a favorite from the 2022 Idea-ology release? It's really hard for me to pick, with the Curator Snippets and Windows being added to the everyday line, and all the mini books in the Memoir Ephemera packet, the Design Trims.....but that new Barrel.....oh my! Definitely some wonderful new skus in this release so be sure to heck them all out at TimHoltz.com

The Hobbit Hole Curio Clock was a super fun make! My husband is a huge Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fan, so this one was for him. Plus I just couldn't get Hobbit Hole out of my mind from the minute I saw it so I was meant to build a little home in the Shire. And it lights up! I'll show that in an upcoming tutorial.

The door was made using that pop out rim from the front of the clock.

I made this springtime birdhouse with lots of the new and existing Idea-ology.

This might be my favorite make of mine from this release. I really enjoyed all the tiny details I put into this. I recorded myself as I made this so there will be a detailed Youtube tutorial on this piece as soon as I get it back from Tim and Mario.
