I went a little crazy with my Valentine decor this year and we don't really celebrate Valentines Day. But I had fun using everything from Tim Holtz and Ranger Ink supplies to stuff I found at the Dollar Tree and everything in between.
This is my kitchen mantle.
I included some vintage kitchen things like this canister, grater, and jello molds, with some chalk art I made with some Bible verses about love. I bought the frames from the Dollar Tree and painted them with black paint covered in a layer of pink paint, so that when I lightly sanded it, the black paint showed through.
I found two of these wooden hearts at Michael's and repainted them and changed the ribbon on them to fit my decor. I also hand painted the little red berries into little black berries. The heart tin I found at a thrift store last year,
The center of the mantle consists of a burlap garland that I made by hand gathering burlap ribbon from Beverly's. The banner is made from American Crafts DIY Shop banners. I stamped them with Tim Holtz Valentine stamp from the Seasonal Catalog 2 stamp set. I sewed some lace along the tops of them and added black cardstock label shape cut with the Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers Mini Label die. The letters were old chipboard letters that I painted along with two chipboard hearts cut from Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers Hearts. I tied some junk bows with gingham material, lace, tulle and twine.
The small frames were from the Michael's $2 bin. I painted them black and highighted with light pink paint. The ovals and silhouettes were cut using Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers dies. I made the scallops using decorative scissors. The heart jello mold was copper and clashed, so I painted it silver and then aged it will Tim Holtz Distress paints and Mod Podge.
Moving out the the front porch, I made some things to put in the urns out of supplies from the Dollar Tree. I bought a piece of black foam core, four pink felt hearts, white streamers, two packages of exselsior, two squares of foam, and two knives.
I used the foam core as the center, I traced the heart shape onto it and cut two hearts out. I ruffled the streamers along the edge and then mod podged the felt hearts onto one side. Then I ruffled the streamers on the other side and mod podged the felt hearts onto it as well. Once it was dry, I slid the blade of the knife into the foam board at the bottom of the heart and glued it in place. Then attached the foam squares into the urns, then covered it with the excelsior and glued the handle of the knives into the foam in the urns. I added burlap ribbons and viola.
The front door wreath was made using a wire form. I took an entire bolt of burlap ribbon and hand gathered it and then wrapped that around the wire form.
The garland I wound around the wreath is made using two heart garlands from the Dollar Tree. I Mod Podged heart cut from sheet music using the Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers Heart die.
I liked the look of the garland but felt it needed something. I found these pink hearts at Beverly's and thought they would be perfect, but they were too light, so I dabbed some Black Soot Distress Paint on them and wiped it off with a cloth and they looked like pewter. PERFECT! I loved them. Just what the garland needed. You will see some of these garlands later on that I made the same way but used black heart rhinestones that I found in the $2 bin at Michael's.
The pennant banner is made with American Crafts DIY Shop I edged with a Tim Holtz Lace Border and Movers and Shapers Heart die. The letters and old chipboard letters I painted.
The top ribbon is some thing burlap ribbon I sewed onto gingham and behind it are pieces of a pink and cream twig garland I got from Michael's. The sequined heart is from the clearance section at Michael's.
Walking through the front door, you see this entrance table.
My friend Sandy sent me the lovely card in this picture and I thought it fit perfectly. I painted and decorated the the books last year. I decorated two dress forms this year. This is the smaller one.
I used Pink Sherbet Alcohol Ink to color the glass knob and the glass baubles. I antiqued the flowers and hear with pink Distress Paint. The chain is from the Tim Holtz Ideaology line.
The Tim Holtz Fragment was decorated using a metallic backed transfer technique Tim has featured on his blog several times.
I found this heart at JoAnn's and loved it, but it was cream, blue and green. Nice but it doesn't fit my Valentine decor so I painted pink over it and distressed it. Then I sewed some gingham onto some burlap ribbon for the bow.
Another sequined heart from the Michael's sale section.
Inside the bird cage I put some foam hearts from the Dollar Tree and on top are two burlap birds from Beverly's
The Living Room Mantle
I made the banner last year out of gingham fabric and burlap. I painted two silver platters with pink and cream paint and antiqued them. The cherub LOVE, cherub circular ornament and cherub pedestal that the dress form are on were from thrift stores. I painted them and antiqued them. The three mercury glass candle holders are from Beverly's.
This is the large dress form I decorated. I made the crown out of a toilet paper roll, some ribbon, paint, and some foam rose stickers and the top is a Tim Holtz Ideaology Hitch Fastener.
Again, I used the metallic backed transfer on the fragment.
The platters I painted and antiqued. The garland I hand gathered burlap ribbon and then I wrapped it with two of the Dollar Tree heart garlands.
The large heart I found at JoAnn's. Just like the ones from Michael's, I painted it pink (it was red) and painted the red berries black and then changed the ribbon and lace across it. I also made a second set of silhouette frames like the ones on the kitchen mantle, and decorated the bottles.
This was a tequila bottle someone gave me. I added the foam frame from my sister's stash, painted the whole thing black, then pink, then antiqued it and added a Tim Holtz Ideaology key on some Idealogy chain. The heart was distressed with pink Distress Paint and was an item I found in my stash of old jewelry junk.
This was a Royal Crown bottle someone gave me. Same thing, I added the foam decoration, painted it black then pink, then distressed it. The crown was from the Michael's $2 bin and I distressed it with pink Distress Paint.
This last bottle was also a gift, I added several of the foam decorations to an already decorative bottle. I painted it black, then pink, then disrtressed. I added some Ideaology baubles and chain as well.
This is the little vignette to the side of the mantle.
I made these cherub frames and Valentine tags last year
You know the story with this.
I made these hearts last year as well.
I made this frame a few years ago using Graphic 45 paper.
More burlap hearts I made last year.
The coffee table, more hearts.
Yeah, I went nuts sewing hearts last year, This year it was the burlap garlands.
The entertainment center in the family room was the last thing I decorated this year. Burlap garlands, heart garlands, a banner, sequined heart and the frames with the love Bible verses in them.
I hope you enjoyed checking out my Valentine decor this year as much as I enjoyed making it. It was great fun!
