Christmas Greetings - Seasonal Scribbles

There are so many terrific ideas out there for using these delightfully whimsical Seasonal Scribble Stamps from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous. Tags, gift cards, and so many super cute makes. 

When I saw these stamps, they reminded me of the postcards and postage stamps that line the exit of Disneyland's It's a Small World ride.  So I set about making a card that with that in mind. I also used one of my favorite older techniques -- Distress Marker Stamping.

 Pick and image and a sentiment from the Seasonal Scribbles set. Put them very close together on a stamp platform. If you are going to be die cutting this image, you will want to die cut the paper first and then center the stamps on the shape before doing the following steps.

Use various colors of Distress Markers to color in the image directly on the stamp.

When you are done coloring it should look like this.  Now you need to breathe on it like you breathe on glasses when you want to clean them or like you used to breathe on the car window in the winter when you wanted it to fog up so you could write on it.

Then press the image onto a piece of Distress Mixed Media Heavystock. Breathe on it again and stamp again.  If you want the colors to be more vibrant, you can color it again, breathe, stamp again.

For my images I cut several postage stamp shapes from the (now retired) Stacked Postage dies from Sizzix and Tim Holtz. I stamped the snow in Tumbled Glass, then the flakes in Faded Jeans and then sentiment in Chipped Sapphire.

This image is stamped in Festive Berries, Peeled Paint, and Gathered Twigs, with the bit of postage lines peeking from the corner stamped in Black Soot. The postage lines are from a set from two years ago called Holiday Postmarks.

I used Festive Berries, Scattered Straw and Peeled Paint.

This one was fun! Wild Honey, Festive Berries, Chipped Sapphire, Peeled Paint.

The Holly Leaves have Peeled Paint and Pine Needles on them, berries were Festive Berries and then postmark and sentiment were in Black Soot. You may also note that I did machine stitch around all of the stamp shapes after I stamped them. This is completely optional, or you can draw the stitching with a fine tip pen. I was just compelled to do it and I couldn't finish the card unless I sewed on them.

The background was made by stamping all of the various postmark stamps from the Holiday Postmarks onto a piece of Distress Mixed Media Heavystock in Brushed Corduroy. I stamped each postmark individually so that they ended up making a pattern.  Then I went over the whole piece with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink on a blending tool.

I lightly spritzed it with a bit of water to make some water drops.

Then I sprayed a tiny bit of Festive Berries Distress Stain into a plastic cup, sprayed a tiny bit of water in it and then used the Distress Splatter Brush to add some red flecks to the background. I did the same with Forest Moss Spray Stain.

The final bits were to pop the stamped shapes up off the background, and arrange them on the front of a 4.25x5.5 card. I added some Long Fasteners to the corner and tied some black twine around the edge.

There's a Feeling of Christmas - Yultide Gatherings

Oh this is another one of the beautiful botanical stamps from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous.  They are always a favorite and this one has some particularly festive elements that come with it. They can be used by themselves, or layered as I did with this card, to create a dimensional piece.

I began by stamping the large bouquet on Distress Mixed Media Cardstock in Black Archival Ink. Then I used my Distress Markers and a Waterbrush  watercolor it in.  As with any intricate watercoloring, there are so many colors in this piece that I didn't link to them. I just used what strikes me at the moment and don't keep track or is messes with my mojo. I encourage you to do the same. Don't get caught up in exact colors, just stamp the image several times and experiment with color.

Now, get ready for some fussy cutting! Are you glad the Tonic Mini Snips come in R and L versions? If you make this card they will get put to good use.

Now you will want to stamp the individual stamps onto Distress Mixed Media Heavystock, color them and then fussy cut them out. I will state right up front that this is quite a task. It takes patience, so put on a good Hallmark movie or something that doesn't need your complete attention and relax and cut away.

Some pieces are obviously easier to cut than others which gives you a nice break.

On this one the pine needles almost did me in!

See? Oh my word they took me the longest! When I was finished I went around each piece with the brush end of a brown Distress Marker and a very, very fine detail brush to cover the white edges with some color.

Before assembling the card, I stamped some of the music from the Music and Advert stamp set lightly in a few areas around the piece in the second image in this post.  I inked the music stamp with Pumice Stone Distress Ink and then used my hand to push it onto the paper in places so there are light, uneven pieces of the stamp. Then I went around the edges with Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink and machine stitched around it with Gold Metallic sewing thread.

Once the base piece is finished, start layering the fussy cut pieces into place. I added dimensional adhesives like foam dots behind the outer pieces and adhered them directly over the matching images.

Parts of the fussy cut images will be behind some of the other pieces. I added the holly and the pinecone on the top of the card. I also added some of the Idea-ology Metallic Dots here and there for some festive gold touches.

The poinsettia is in the middle of the card and I added it last as most of the other pieces had parts that fit underneath it.

Here is that pine piece.

You can see here how it fits under the leaf of the poinsettia. I cut some of my foam dots so they would fit under the fussy cut pieces and not stick out.

The detail on these stamps is incredible!

To finish it off I tied a little bit of black and gold twine around the bottom of the main piece. I got this a few years ago in the Target $1 bin. Then I stamped a sentiment from the Scenic Holiday stamp set onto some Distress Mixed Media Heavystock and added it at the bottom. I love the font and sayings in the sentiments on that set!

The larger base piece of this card is some Kraft Stock cut for a 5x7 card, so I think since the black card base is 5x7 that I cut a piece of Kraft stock to be about a 6 5/8 x 4 5/8. Then I applied Black Soot Distress Ink through the Gingham Layering Stencil all across the piece with a Distress Brush.

This card isn't simple but technique-wise it is pretty straight forward.  It takes a bit of time so this card probably wouldn't be duplicated and I definitely wouldn't give it to anyone who couldn't fully appreciate the work that went into it. You know who those people are!  Or better yet, frame it and use it as a piece of art.

Peace on Earth - Modern Christmas Distress Marker Stamping

For my last card on World Card Making Day 2019, I decided to go with a peaceful card.  These stamps and the stencil are all from Tim Holtz and Stampers Anonymous.

The sentiment on the Modern Christmas set is meant to look like a label. As you can see, the black art is stamped in Black Soot Archival, but the letters show the color of the underlying paper.

I tied some Craft Thread around the stenciled part of the card but kept the embellishments to a minimum. Speaking of stencil, lets talk about how to use this beautiful Shifter Baubles stencil.

Again, when stamping a full background stamp or using a stencil, I opt for Sticky Grid by Sizzix. They are really nice low tack double sided sheets.

I learned from Tim Holtz that it works best to tape the stencil at the top so you can lift it to check coverage.  For stencils with small areas like the Shifter Bauble, use the Distress Brushes.

Here you can see it is easier to lift the stencil and peek to see how the progress is going.

Then wipe off the green ink and flip the stencil over to get it to line up and mask off the green baubles before you start the red ones.

Edge the base piece with brown ink.

To stamp the Modern Christmas Deer, I used Distress Markers. This takes a little bit of patience and a lot of hot air. LOL!

Position the stamp on some Mixed Media Heavystock. Choose some red and green Distress Markers.  They need to be juicy, so if you have some that are a little dry, set those aside for a different technique.

Color the sections on the stamp with different marker colors. Vary the reds and greens so that they don't butt up against each other when possible.

Work a section at a time. Color on the stamp and then put you mouth next to the stamp and breathe on it, like you breathe on glasses when you want to clean them or like you breath on cold glass when you want to fog it up. The water vapor from your lungs will attach to the ink and allow you to stamp it. It allows you to transfer the color to the paper without it running into each other like it would if you sprayed it with water. That is a different look and technique.

Continue coloring and breathing and stamping.

Until the entire image is colored and stamped. Then you cut it out and ink the edges.

The tree in back was stamped with three colors of green ink, Forest Moss, Peeled Paint, and Shabby Shutters. Then inked all over with the green Distress brush and edges with a Brown Distress Ink.

On the very back page I stamped here and there with the plaid stamp from the Lumberjack set. I used my hand instead of a stamping block or platform so that it was light and uneven.

Finish it off with a little bit of machine stiching and you are finished. This is another card design that can be replicated fairly easily and quickly if you do each step multiple times before moving on to another step.
